It is hard if not impossible to discern whether the Germans’ “wait-and-see” attitude initially was due to their view that the Turks were primarily Hungary’s problem or they were holding out hope that Ferdinand’s situation would become more precarious with further Turkish advances, on the back of which they could wrangle a better deal from the Hapsburgs. One thing is clear: The German Diets’ stance began to change as the Turkish gains in Europe accumulated and Ferdinand became more desperate.

Following the Diet of Speyer in the summer of 1526, the Germans not only became more vocal about their demands to link the Protestants’ official recognition with aid to Hungary but also increased the extent to which they came to the aid of Ferdinand when the Turkish advances threatened to be detrimental even to the Germans.

Fischer-Galati (1959, pp. 19–24) identifies that Ferdinand began to cave in to at least some of the German Diets’ demands as early as 1526:

By the summer of 1526, when a new Diet met at Speyer the Hungarian situation had become critical. The Turks were about to launch a decisive campaign against [Hungary] and Ferdinand was gravely concerned. . . . The Diet, however, was not swayed by his arguments. . . . The estates declined to consider the question of assistance to Hungary before solving the German religious problem. . . . [Ferdinand’s] alternatives were limited: he could either accede to the wishes of the estates or dissolve the Diet. Turkish pressure on Hungary was too great for him to choose the latter alternative; therefore he reluctantly agreed to the former.
